- Whether a future Bergman, Cuarón (Alfonso or Carlos), Tarantino, or even quasi-Hype Williams, there’s a place for up-and-coming filmmakers in the first annual El Paso On Demand Film Exhibition. The competition is the brainchild of media consultant and film professor Joseph Villescas, who wanted to create incentive for locals to create films through collaboration with Time Warner Cable.

Fernando Traverso visits UTEP for the The Disappeared

This Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Traverso will conduct a workshop to print bike stencils on banners that will be hung throughout the community. If you bring a piece of fabric (the size of a twin sheet or larger), Traverso will paint one of his bicycles on it. The workshop will be held in parking lot P-6 across from the Rubin Center.
Aerosol artwork show, Pieced Together

The turnout at the Silos Aerosol Art Space next to the Rescue Mission was at estimated at about 500 on the show's first day, according to show curator Nathan Nordstrom. Attendees brought non-perishable items to donate to the Rescue Mission.

Aerosol artwork show, Pieced Together, opens this weekend

The prestigious national aerosol art tour “Pieced Together,” featuring canvases of aerosol artwork by established artists touring U.S. cities, Will be coming to El Paso, Texas on May 23rd and 24th. Before the opening, Dave “Grave” Herrera lead a tour through the silos to view the work that would soon be whitewashed over to make way for different pieces and new plans.

Music is powerful stuff. So say the folks at From The Top, an independent nonprofit organization that “celebrates the passion, dedication and personal stories of the nation’s outstanding young classical musicians.” Through its National Public Radio (NPR) television and radio show of the same name, the organization, in conjunction with the El Paso Summer Music Festival (EPSMF), honors five young musicians on its finale show, slated to tape live from El Paso on June 13.

As the daughter of a former local mayor, Linda Francis Lee’s very favorite El Paso memory is meeting her now-husband under one of the city’s hallmark summer sunsets. In fact, it was her own experience as a Texas-bred debutante that inspired the author’s latest novel, The Ex-Debutante. With over a dozen books to her credit, Lee now lives in New York City, but her heart is firmly rooted in Texas—evidenced by the Southwest settings and Southern belles she writes about.

Local businessman Mark E. Estrada, owner of Alameda Thrifty Pharmacy, is hosting the first annual Mental Health Awareness Art Show and Sale. The proceeds from the event will go to start up a foundation in an effort to help give good quality care to those who might otherwise not have the means to pay for it.

With their debut album, Aaron & the Polynomials are quickly proving their mettle as contemporary Americana musicians. Seamlessly blending elements of jazz, rock and folk, the Austin-based band has recently crossed over into viral territory with the addition of their album to iTunes.
