Many of us remember our abuelitas coming home from the Mexican bakery with a brown bag of fresh-baked sweets. You might recall the pig-shaped ginger cookies (marranitos) or the big, round bread that resembles a seashell (conchas). However, Mexican bakeries are loaded with a variety of sweet bread, each with interesting names that vary from place to place.
We decided to visit Bowie Bakery, El Paso’s well-known treasure chest of pan dulce and wedding cakes. The most commonly requested sweets are pictured below with their names.

Try the panaderia at the new Mercado Mayachen on Myrtle and Walnut Streets (just off Texas Avenue) that opened May 1st - delicious stuff, including bizcochos y polvorones. Developed by La Mujer Obrera, the beautifully remodeled building includes a grocery with fresh fruits and vegetables, meat and fish market, liquados and paletas, as well as great take-out for lunch and supper. And there are lovely Mexican artesania items for sale, as well as entertainment on the week-end.
