This extraordinary little girl is already a successful author. She has written and illustrated two children’s books, “Mystery School,” and “Mystery School: Monday Sleepover Disaster, ” both of which are available in 25,000 stores nationwide. Currently, she is working on her third book in the series.
“The books are based on all the adventures that happen in my life,” says Fastje, while she dangles her little feet off the end of the living room couch. “I’m already trying to decide on a title for my fourth book.”
Fastje spent most of her early childhood in traditional school, but wasn’t being challenged enough academically. That was when she and her parents made the decision to begin home school. She has recently begun high school education which includes a 9th through 12th grade curriculum.
“I was basically bored in school,” says Shanaya, who prefers the challenges of home schooling, “I love to learn new things, and home schooling gives me the time to write my books.”
Heavy text books cover the large wooden desk situated in the middle of the Fastje's living room, evidence that home school isn’t as easy as some might think. “As she learns, we learn, as she grows, we grow,” says Lothar Fastje, father of Shanaya.
Writing however, is only one aspect of her life. People to People International, a student ambassador program, has invited Shanaya, along with other El Paso high school students, on an educational tour of England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland in 2010. She also creates bracelets and bookmarks for My One School Inc., a worldwide charity which donates books and school supplies to underprivileged children.
“I love causes that have to do with children because there are many kids that need help and I feel that there is not enough of it,” says Shanaya as her big brown eyes light up her adorably freckled face.
This little prodigy has accomplished more than most people achieve in a lifetime. In 2007, Shanaya received the National Award for Extraordinary Excellence, after entering a national book writing contest. Her book was a top finalist among 3000 entries. She has also been honored as one of only fifteen heroes by Shadow Forest Authors for her contribution to children’s charities. Most recently, Shanaya received an award from Governor Rick Perry, in recognition as a national author and a shining star of Texas.
Her parents couldn’t be happier, beautifully displaying each of her awards near the entrance of their cozy home. “She is extraordinary,” says Connie Fastje, Shanaya's mother. "What you see is what you get with Shanaya; she is not a boastful child.”
Shanaya is incredibly modest, in fact, she was eager to move the conversation along and talk instead about her friends and her pet cat Molly. Still, it seems like everyday Shanaya is invited somewhere new to speak about her successes. Several local public schools have extended an invitation to her to speak out against bullying, and on Saturday, October 3rd, Clarkston Art, Guitars & Gifts will be hosting Shanaya’s first book signing event from 11-2 p.m.
Writing is truly a talent for this young author, but she is certainly keeping her options open about any future careers, “I would also like to be a doctor, or maybe go into politics,” says Shanaya, who hopes to one day to attend Harvard University.
For now though, she is most happy when she is writing and encourages all children to follow their hearts, “Whatever your dreams are, do it, don’t hold back,” says Shanaya, smiling.
Clarkston Art, Guitars & Gifts is located on 407 E. Nevada Ave. For more information, call 915.351.0875.
